Nandan Nilekani after the recent Infosys quarterly results made a hugely deep statement – ‘I am glad, Infosys is back to its Boring ways’.

My take away from his statement:-  ‘Anything that is very exciting has a very high risk-reward ratio of it turning out to be a disappointment’. Boring is the NEW Sexy.

How & Why do i say this:-

  • The fastest way to lose money is to try to make fast money. Stock market e.g. people think themselves to be the Rambo of stock market and invest their hard earned money into stocks which are recommended by those chameleon type experts (who sound like chanakya) on Business Channels. More often than not they end up losing. The idea was exciting though (initially) as they saw some stocks doubling or increasing by as high as 50% in just a few months. Just that theirs did not or just would not. Had they gone ahead with the boring, unexciting slow method of Mutual Funds via SIP route (where MAGIC is not ostensibly present)- maybe the risk reward ratio of their investments would have worked in their favor. • Those love at first sights and sex at second sights, marriages which happened via Tinder sound steamy but more often than not such steam usually leads to burns. Real good & stable relationships usually take time. They are never FMCG. They go through long patches of ennui and finally if they hatch with the warmth of understanding; they become lasting.

  • Those months and months (sometimes years) of continuous studies towards a competitive exam are definitely boring (as they require sacrificing the glitters), but the rewards of sustaining that boredom can be huge.

  • The Fast food is fast & yummy but science says that it increases your tummy & slows down your health. Subscribing to Zomato Gold might have remained your coolest idea of this year but then what gets eaten through that might not just be. Investing that INR 500 on fruits instead of that pizza (whose posterior is bursting with processed cheese) sounds boring but if done consistently could be your THE idea for longevity and health. The apparently boring Daal-Chaawal is the most underrated dish of last many centuries.

Summary – For fast acting relief – SLOW DOWN. Boring will never be IN. But will always, always stay the formula for lasting success in any domain. Embrace Boredom to win your Race.

Adrenaline is good. Consistency is Better. Habit Forming Consistency is THE BEST. It comes at the cost of Boredom though. 99.99% junta doesn’t have it in them to pay this price.
